Project Seven -- Spatial Model

Objectives

Develop your three-dimensional project model from an abstract massing study model to a spatial building model with walls, door and window openings, etc..

To understand the spatial structure and inside/outside relationships of your project building.

Procedure

To develop your project while keeping your building massing model intact, copy the model file, and archive an electronic reference copy of the original massing model.

Then use Wallify, Poly-wall and Poly-line, and all the other tools and functions of DesignWorkshop, as appropriate, to hollow out your massing model , rebuild portions as necessary, and construct additional parts and details to develop a structurally complete and accurate model of the project building.

Also, build a simple representation of the building site, including basic terrain and very simple massing models of neighboring buildings, as appropriate. Make sure that these objects are in the "site" phase of your model by the time you hand it in for this assignment.

As you work on the building model, be sure to keep careful backups and progressive versions of the model for reference and for data security. (Absolutely no credit will be granted for missing data.)

To Hand In

For the hard copy portion of this project, set up a nice overall shaded two-point perspective view of the interior of the spatial model on screen.

The interior view may look pretty bare, because you haven't furnished and detailed the space yet. But you should still carefully adjust the eye and look points, and fine-tune the zoom percentage, so the view looks good and communicates something significant about the building.

When you have finished composing the interior view, Set the view with the view name "Interior View", and save the model for handing in.

Print the rendered interior view on 8 1/2" x 11" paper to hand in, either in color or grayscale. The hard copy should (as always) be labeled with your name, the date, the class, the assignment, and the name and architect for the building.

Electronically hand in a copy of the spatial model itself by 8:30am on Tuesday, 26 November. Because of the importance of keeping up the development of your model, you will receive 5 timeliness points simply for successfully handing in a substantially complete spatial model by this Tuesday deadline. Late delivery of the spatial model will cause deduction of both the timeliness points _and_ the 20% late work penalty.

1 -- Name the DesignWorkshop model file according to our strict naming convention before compressing it:

A###.f96.7-YourLastName

(In place of "### " substitute "222" if you are in A222, or "610" if you are in A410, A510, or A610.)

2 -- Then compress and encode the file using DropStuff, which will automatically adds ".sit" to the end of the file name.

Now the file should be ready to upload to the server. Double-check to make sure the file name is correct at this stage, with the ".sit" on at the very end of the name, like this example:

A222.f96.7-Matthews.sit

3 -- Once your file is saved, named correctly, and encoded into a Stuff-It archive with the ".sit" added to the end of the name, then you can actually upload your homework. First, click the link below to go to the "ftp" folder named "a222.f96.ftp/Hwk_7-Spatial_Model".

Homework Seven Delivery Folder

Once you've connected to the homework folder, use the Netscape File menu Upload File... command to select the correct homework image file and send it to the server. After your file has finished uploading, click the Reload button in Netscape to update file list. Your file should then appear in the list in the ftp folder. Check to make sure your file is there, and has a size considerably greater than 0 KB.

4 -- If your file has been delivered properly, its name will appear in this list in the homework folder as shown in Netscape, with the file type listed as "Macintosh Archive".

Additional Delivery Notes

Your final DesignWorkshop document file MUST be encoded into a "Stuff-It archive" just before you hand it in. This is easily done with a tiny piece of software called "DropStuff", which is available on the DuckWare CD-ROM, via AppleShare on the campus net at "CC Public Domain" or over the web directly from Alladin. Look for "DropStuff w/EE 3.5.1 Installer".

If your project is late, and the main delivery folder has been closed for uploads, you can delivery your project to the late projects folder:

Grading criteria

Building Model
architectural accuracy...........5
quality of modeling .............5
timeliness ......................5
Printed View
correct view type................5
compositional quality of view....5

Total Points .................. 25

Due at the beginning of class, Tuesday 11-26-96.
Note the special timeliness bonus for models handed in on time.

(Please remember -- any hard copies not handed in by the beginning of class, and electronic files not handed in by half an hour before class, will be considered late for grading purposes.)
