Subject: RE: Good Files and Bad Files
To: heh@darkwing.uoregon.edu

Holly,

I'm glad to hear you got the word about this, and thanks for the note.

It looks like the first time you uploaded your files the server was temporarily
full. (The clue to you about this is that the files uploaded to the server do
not show a reasonable size -- instead they show no size, or a zero size.)

It looks like the second time was fine, so your final project files have made it
all the way to the right place.

Congratulations on a completing an intense term!

Kevin

hello kevin:

a friend called me last night and told me my folder was on the "bad" folder
list. I just re-submitted it now. I hope it comes thru okay. what makes
them bad? everytime I upload a file, the bonging of the alarm goes off on
my computer until I exit netscape. the alarm does only that, it does not
prevent me from doing anything. do you know why it goes off?

Thanks! Happy holidays.
Let me know if it doesn't come thru.

holly hoover.

From: Matthews, Kevin on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 9:49 PM Subject: RE: PICT troubles resolved... To: natewong@gladstone.uoregon.edu Nathan, Thanks for the note. My guess about the PICT insertion is that somehow your ClarisWorks is not completely installed, so the XTND translation module for the PICT format is missing from the Claris folder in your System folder (or some other XTND element may be missing). The best way to solve this would be to just carefully reinstall ClarisWorks from scratch from your original disks. I bet it will work then. Handing in the model twice is not a big problem. Thanks for letting us know about it though. The thing about the points on the final project -- I increased the points for that this year over last year, which agrees with your general thrust. The main reason the points aren't even higher is that the final project rests on top of the massing, spatial, and detailed models. If you look at the points of all those combined, there's a lot of credit there, and the 70 points is really just for assembling the views and printing it all at the end. But it is always worth another look, and I'll be keeping your comments in mind as we tune things in the future. Congratulations on getting it all together! Kevin _______________________________________________________________________________ From: natewong@gladstone.uoregon.edu on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 6:57 PM Subject: PICT troubles resolved... To: Matthews, Kevin Professor Matthews, Thanks for replying to my somewhat desperate letter! My model has now been fully completed, but not without its share of troubles. You see, while I was working on my computer at home, I couldn't retrieve any of my PICT files. However, while a GTF was assisting me on a computer at school, it worked just fine. Perturbed but happy, I went back home with the intent of quickly finishing it off. But, to my demise, it did not work again. Finally, I had to use a friend's Mac to insert my drawings into ClarisWorks, and it worked without a problem. While my project has been handed in, I am still hesitant about my computer, since it doesn't seem to want to function. I have all my extensions turned off and everything, but still can't figure out what it is that's causing all this. Oh well, the procrastinator in me tells me to deal with it next term! As a note, I would like to inform you that my final DW model was saved twice into the ftp folder. One is named A222.f96.model-WongN, while the other lacks the "N" at the very end. The reason behind this is because while uploaded "...WongN", a series of alert sounds made me believe that it wasn't working. Since I couldn't see my file there, I decided to send it in once more. Upon re-delivering of the file, a message came up, saying that I was not authorized to send it in or something like that. That's when I changed the name to just "...Wong," only to find out that the original, "...WongN" had been delivered. In any case, I hope that I don't lose marks for that! On the topic of grades, I would like to add that, I feel that 70 marks for the Final Project seems a little low-- considering that the detailed section drawing a few projects back was worth 40. (Not to mention that this took considerably more than just double the time of that previous project...) Now, this is only my opinion. I understand that there are many hidden and carefully calculated factors involved in the weighting of each project that I am not aware of. However, it would seem more rewarding had it counted for a larger percentage of our entire grades. In any case, I'm glad that this has been a most fascinating class, in which I'm certain to make use of every skill I learnt in the near future...my Mac allowing, of course! Thanks for teaching me~ Sincerely, Nathan

From: Matthews, Kevin on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 6:04 PM Subject: Bad Size for Uploaded Files To: pbear@gladstone.uoregon.edu Ben, I'm sorry to say that the server filled up around 2am this morning. You must have just hit it, and your files DID NOT upload. That's why they didn't show a valid file size. That's also why this morning I moeved them into the "bad files" folders on the server, to alert you to the problem. You'll need to upload them again, just following the normal process. From: Matthews, Kevin on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 5:57 PM Subject: Uploading Problems To: Adam Robins Adam, I'm afraid I can't tell what was going wrong for you here -- there are just too many possible variables. In general uploading should be working, though, and most of the class has been able to upload successfully... If you still haven't been able to upload your project, you can come by the DIL and have a GTF store it directly on the GTF computer for maunal uploading later tonight. I'll also be checking back in sometime after dinner... Good luck, Kevin _______________________________________________________________________________ From: Adam Robins on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 1:33 PM Subject: problems To: Matthews, Kevin Following your instructions to the letter, I have not been able toupload my homework. The thing will run as if it actually being uploaded, with that little red bar down in the corner and everything, but my homework never appears on the list on the ftp server. I am not sure if they are full, perhaps, or what. I have tried a few different computers in different locations as well. I am not sure what else to do apart from turn in my homework on disk to your box. Any ideas? Thanks, Adam Robins Architecture 610

From: Matthews, Kevin on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 5:52 PM Subject: Printing Problem? To: Jeffrey J. Nelson Jeff, It's good to hear your files have been uploaded, so now there's just one more chunk to accomplish. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "the printer tells me that they are going through". This may be the key point in which your printing process is breaking down, but without a little more information I can't guess what isn;t working. The first things that I would check are that your print jobs are 1) really getting to the Print Monitor, and 2) aren't just waiting there for the printer to be available. Next I would look at whether ClarisWorks has enough memory allocated to be able to print your file, with ( (2 x theSizeOfYourFile) + 2MB ) being a good starting point. If that doesn't cover it, it would be helpful if you could spell out what computer you're printing from in what physical location, which printer you're printing to, whether you're using the desktop print monitor of the regular print monitor, and _exactly_ what steps you're taking and what messages you're getting, starting from the point at which you click the OK button in the Print dialog box in ClarisWorks. I will be checking back in sometime after dinner tonight. Thanks, Kevin _______________________________________________________________________________ From: Jeffrey J. Nelson on Wed, Dec 11, 1996 4:59 PM Subject: final project To: Matthews, Kevin I don't know if I am a lot less computer literate than I thought or if things just weren't meant to be. This time I was able to upload my files wuite easily but have been completely unsuccessful with retreiving the hard copy. I have printed three times and the printer tells me that they are going through. However they are no where to be found in the printing center and the speed at which they are going through is so fast that it seems decieving. I don't know what to do at this point. I originally printed, or so I thought, over two hours ago and now the deadline is almost up. My file is to big to take to kinko's or to print from the lab since it will not fit on one disk. I will keep trying. I'd appreciate hearing from you with some kind of suggestion of what I should do. I am really proud of my final project and it's really disappointing to think that the end result is going to less meaningful because I am having trouble getting everything in on time and in order. Please get back to me as soon as possible. I still need to discuss the last two projects with you. Thank you. Sincerly, Jeffrey J. Nelson

From: Matthews, Kevin on Thu, Dec 5, 1996 12:59 PM Subject: RE: handing in 8 To: Amy Marino Amy, Note--the key words in that error message are buried in the middle of it: "file/folder exists". That means you file is already on the server. Probably it worked one time and you didn't realize it. I've double checked the server to confirm this. We have your Homework 8 (unless there's another Marino in the class) and you can go on to whatever's next. From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Dec 3, 1996 12:16 PM Subject: RE: to benefit Arch 222 To: Travis Allen Coombs Travis, Thank you for the commment. This is something we continue to work on. We did post the grades available on the web after the first couple of assignments. While our plans to keep up regular web posting of grades proved too ambitious given the current lack of support, since last week we are posting a printout of the full grade sheet on the wall outside the DIL. Please note that in lecture I have also invited all of you to drop by any of the course instructors' office hours, five days a week, to review your grades in detail and in person. This is a standing invitation. I hope this helps, Kevin Matthews _______________________________________________________________________________ From: Travis Allen Coombs on Mon, Dec 2, 1996 10:54 PM Subject: to benefit Arch 222 To: Matthews, Kevin I was thinking of things that would make Arch 222 a better class and I came to the conclusion that the class would be better if the students knew what kind of grades they were getting. I constantly wonder what grade I have in your class and it is quite annoying not knowing. For future reference, maybe you should provide some kind of way to inform students of their grades.

From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Nov 26, 1996 6:10 PM Subject: RE: Question on architecture To: bbondi@dreamscape.com Bill, Interesting question. I think drawing in the paper and pencil sense is becoming less and less important in architecture, although many old-timers in the field would rather not admit it. It was What is really important is an ability to think and see in 2 and 3 dimensions, and to have some kind of effective toolkit for expressing, testing, and communicating those visual and spatial ideas. For the last generation the only options were manual drawings and physical models. For the current generation, being able to do both manual drawings and computer models is very powerful. In the future, I think almost all architectural visualization will be done using computers and digital media. Just how soon that nearly-all-digital future will arrive is pretty hard to say. From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Nov 26, 1996 6:22 AM Subject: RE: DW Error 11 To: Adam Aaron Weiss Cc: Leventhal, Ross Adam, I'm sorry to hear you're having a nasty problem with your computer. Just for the record, it does not sound like any known problem with DesignWorkshop, but rather, more like a general problem with your computer. A couple of other students who have been getting type -11 errors have noticed them cropping up in several applications, because they are actually occurring in the Finder. It would be helpful to know some details about the situation with your machine, including the System software version, the Open Transport networking software version, the size of your model on disk, and the memory setting for your system, the minimum and preferred memory setting for DesignWorkshop, and any other software or tasks which may be running at the same time as DesignWorkshop. Without those details, I can make these general suggestions -- 1) Check the system software setup of your computer carefully against the sample listing which is linked at the top of the Power 8500/120 Setup web page, 2) If you don't find a setup discrepancy which lets you fix the problem, bring your DesignWorkshop model to my office hours today, Tuesday from 2-4pm in the D.I.L. (204 Pacific Hall), so we can verify whether there is a problem with the model itself (since if we can verify a problem, we _can_ fix it) 3) If those steps don't show a problem, then I'll recommend taking your machine into the Computing Center to be checked for possible bad RAM. I know it is incredibly frustrating when your computer is jambed up and you can't tell why. Observational experience suggests to me that strangling anyone doesn't help. Let's work together on this technical problem, step by step, until it is clearly resolved. Thanks, Kevin _______________________________________________________________________________ From: Adam Aaron Weiss on Tue, Nov 26, 1996 12:39 AM Subject: DW Error 11 To: Matthews, Kevin Cc: Leventhal, Ross Kevin- It's now 12:30 am. I've been working on DW for four hours on something very, very small. Everytime I try to move around the building I created for my daycare DW crashes. Literally avery five minutes. It's very difficult to work this way and I hope you figue some way to fix the error in your program. I'm at the point where I want to strangle someone. The file "stalls" for a second about 15% of the way through start up. Do you have any suggestions? All I want to do is pick my view and get out of here, but I can't even seem to do that. Adam Weiss

From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Nov 26, 1996 5:58 AM Subject: RE: A222 (memory) To: Buschman, Jennifer Marie Jennifer, Your memory question is one that will be coming up for more and more people as modeling projects get larger and larger. The immediate thing you can do is to turn on virtual memory, if you haven't already. To do this, pull doen the Apple menu Control Panels > Memory item, to open the Memory control panel. Then first set the "Disk Cache" at the top of the control panel window to 256K. Then look down to the Virtual Memory (VM) section, and click the radio button to turn VM on. Finally, click on the little up and down arrows to adjust the amount of virtual memory. The minimum possible VM is one MD more than your available built-in RAM memory. Since you should have 32MB of built-in physical memory, that would make the minimum VM amount 33MB, which might help a lot, since you get a memory boost just from turning on VM. But if you need more memory than that, you can increase the VM number further, up to about 150% of the built-in RAM. On a standard 32MB system, that would be a VM amount of 48MB. When you're done adjusting, close the Memory control panel. You will probably have to restart your computer for the memory changes to go into effect. If you use more and more virutal memory, your computer will gradually slow down, which is why VM amounts higher than about 150% of your physcical RAM are not recommended. If you can afford it, the nicest way to go is to buy more physical RAM memory, which expands your computer's capacity without gradually slowing it down. I usually buy memory by mail order, using a credit card, and it can usulaly be delivered the next day. One of the many mail order possible places to buy from is: The Chip Merchant 800-808-CHIP voice 619-268-0874 fax http://www.thechipmerchant.com/ 4870 Viewridge Ave San Diego CA 92123 They generally keep among the lowest prices anywhere, adjusting them constantly with the memory market prices, and they have always dealt with me honestly and reliably. From: Matthews, Kevin on Sun, Nov 24, 1996 6:43 PM Subject: RE: System contents and system errors To: peabod96@gladstone.uoregon.edu Dan, Good work on clearly communicating all this picky system information. It does seem like there is something not right with your system, given the several applications which are giving you type 10 and type 11 errors. You don't list the Iomega driver as an extra in your system folder. I think that should be there. And I don't know about the FindIt INIT. You should probably move that to "Extensions-Disabled". But I think what I would do next would be to reinstall System 7.5.3, and then reinstall the System 7.5.5 update, and see if things get any better. I'll be thinking about what else could be going on. From: Matthews, Kevin on Thu, Nov 21, 1996 1:48 PM Subject: RE: ARCH 610 To: Holly Ellen Hoover Hi Holly, The 422/522/610 class next term does take off pretty much where the fall class ends, starting with the assumption of basic technical skills with various software, and focusing on how to use them constructively at various stages of the design process. It is not taught sitting in front of computers, but rather, it is a more thoughful and conceptual course, where the technical component is communicated through description, discussion, and demonstration. We're scheduled to meet in one of the review rooms, and there will be a fair amount of pinning up and discussing student work-in-progress. I put up the course descriptions a couple of days ago. The 610 sheet might be easily missed, 'cause it is way down near the floor. The description can also be found on the web at URL: http://www.dil.uoregon.edu/courses/97.1/a522.w97.html Let me know if you have other questions after you've had a chance to look over the description. From: Matthews, Kevin on Wed, Nov 20, 1996 10:33 AM Subject: RE: architecture 222 --RE: computer purchasing To: mamasan@gladstone.uoregon.edu Jen, A 7600/133 would be an excellent machine. The most obvious difference is that the 7600 is in a more normal horizontal box, whereas the 8500 is in a mini-tower. But the 7600 is a lot easier to work on, and the other picky little technical differences won't matter. I originally wanted to specify 7600/120's for the class, but Apple couldn't give us a good enough price for some reason. Be sure not to scrimp on the 32MB of RAM. The 7600 probably comes with 16MB standard, so you'll probably need to add another 16MB. On a 7600 this normally takes about two minutes. You can RAM lots of places, but if you want to make sure you're getting a good price on that little piece, check with: The Chip Merchant 800-808-CHIP voice 619-268-0874 fax http://www.thechipmerchant.com/ 4870 Viewridge Ave San Diego CA 92123 That's where we usually get RAM, and they almost always have the best prices anywhere. From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Nov 19, 1996 11:50 AM Subject: RE: Winter Term Class specifics inquiry To: Jay Wallen Adams Jay, I would say that an intermediate level of Radiance is a good description of what the course next term will cover, along with three other areas of emphasis. For example, there are specific ways to streamline Radiance use in connection with DW 1.5 that I think will let us push rendering projects to a more sophisticated level, using more of Radiance, without making it any harder. From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Nov 12, 1996 8:11 AM Subject: RE: extra credit? To: Brandie Lee Cornell Brandie, There's no particular extra credit in this course. From: Matthews, Kevin on Tue, Oct 29, 1996 8:42 AM Subject: RE: Section drawing To: Brandie Lee Cornell Brandie, The Cary House is by Joe Esherick, and unfortunately there isn't a good book focusing on his work, even though it is excellent. I'm sure there are plans of the Cary House in "Bay Area Houses" by Sally Woodbridge, but probably not sections. For sections, you could try doing a periodical index searchfor magzaines within a year or two of when the building was built -- one of the librarians at the AAA Library should be able to help with this. Unfortunately, there's no guarranttee that a section drawing has been published for any given building. If a section drawing for the Cary House is too hard to find, in the end you'll just have to choose a diferent building for this project. Regarding scaling, I've linked some instructions to the course schedule page. Look for "Scaling a Drawing." Good luck, Kevin _______________________________________________________________________________ From: Brandie Lee Cornell on Mon, Oct 28, 1996 11:52 PM Subject: Section drawing To: Matthews, Kevin I went to the AAA Library, and looked at the Great Buildings Collection. I found a section of the Cary House in Mill Valley, California, but I couldn't print it, and I couldn't find a book about it either. There were also a few others I liked, but I can't print them either. Can you tell me how to go about finding a picture of one of these drawings and printing it ( or just getting it on paper), so I can draw from it? Also, none of the buildings had dimensions, so how are we supposed to figure out a scale to draw from? ( does it have to be totally accurate?) Thanks for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.
